PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – As summer temperatures hit, it's important to remember the danger the heat brings along.While a majority of parents say they can't imagine leaving their child in the back seat of a hot car, the vast majority of such cases happen unintentionally.Over the past 25 years, an average of 38 children a year die from heatstroke after being left in hot cars, according to NoHeatstroke.org. During the summer, that is almost two children per week.A car can heat up by 20 degrees and become deadly in only 10 minutes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). (AP) - A solar storm forecast for Thursday is expected to give sky-gazers in 17 American states a chance to glimpse the Northern Lights, the colorful sky show that happens when solar wind hits the atmosphere.Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, are most often seen in Alaska, Canada and Scandinavia, but an 11-year solar cycle that’s expected to peak in 2024 is making the lights visible in places farther to the south. WACO, Texas (FOX 44/KWKT) -- McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara called a press conference Friday morning to discuss a human trafficking operation recently completed by his office.Sheriff McNamara says his team arrested 17 people during a ten-day sting operation that started in June. 13 people face charges of trying to purchase sex from an adult; two more are accused of trying to pay for sex with a minor; and another two people face charges of online solicitation of a minor.Joshua Dewitt of Tomahawk, Wisconsin is accused of online solicitation of a minor. He is in the process of being extradited to McLennan County. SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The concert at Saratoga Performing Arts Center on July 8 was evacuated on the report of a bomb threat, according to police. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — There was a heavy police presence on Wolf Road late Saturday night. According to the Colonie Police, a woman in a wheelchair trying to cross the road was struck by a vehicle. She sustained serious but not-life-threatening injuries and is being treated at the Albany Medical Center.The driver stopped and cooperated with the police. Speed is not a factor in the incident. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Police are investigating a rollover crash that took place on New Loudon Road in North Colonie. The accident occurred at 9:55 a.m. on July 8. Police say that three cars were involved in the crash, with two of the vehicles rolling over and one catching on fire. Only the three drivers occupied the vehicles. Officers were told by one of the drivers that an uninvolved vehicle allegedly caused the chain-reaction crash after pulling into the roadway, causing multiple vehicles to swerve. A woman was hit and killed by a car in South San Jose Saturday night, according to police. It’s the second pedestrian death in the city in just three days.The accident reportedly occurred around 9:45 p.m. near the intersection of East Capitol Expressway and Monterey Highway.The woman was brought to a nearby hospital, where she later died. Police say the collision is being investigated as a hit-and-run.The westbound section of East Capitol Expressway between Snell Ave and Seven Trees Boulevard was closed while police investigated the collision.
