Each week, WTOP is picking one student athlete to be featured on-air and online as our Player of the Week.This week’s WTOP Player of the Week is senior Cordell Cozay Brown of Frederick Douglass High School in Maryland.Brown loves football and has been playing since he was 4 years old. A team captain on this year’s team, he played center and offensive tackle, while helping the school win the Maryland State Championship. Brown has also been chosen All-County twice.When not playing football, Brown lends his talent to the track team, throwing the shot put and discus.Brown gives back to others by helping to feed those experiencing homelessness with his church. DENVER (KDVR) -- Renters have a harder time breaking into homeownership in Colorado than most of the country, depending on the city. Both rental costs and homeownership costs in Colorado are some of the nation's most expensive, matching only coastal markets. As of March 2023, the median sales price for a Denver area single family detached home was $620,000, requiring a top-tier income to afford both down payment and monthly mortgage payments. Colorado homes are getting smaller and more expensive Renters have a such a large bridge to cross in much of Colorado that a majority will never be able to buy a home, according to an analysis by moving firm HireAHelper. DENVER (KDVR) -- Nobody likes taxes, but Coloradans have a better time around tax season than most other states. Financial adviser SmartAsset crunched tax filings and income data to see in which states do filers write off the most in their annual returns. Coastal states and certain states in the Mountain West have as many as twice as many tax returns with itemized deductions than interior states. ‘It is unbearable’: This is the smelliest place in Denver, according to complaints The study ranks three items - how many tax returns contain write offs, the average deduction's dollar amount and the percentage of income the itemized deductions equal. Colorado ranked 11th highest among U.S. states for a combination of the three metrics. In the Centennial State, 12.23% of all tax returns have itemized deduction, the country's tenth-highest share. Miami-Dade Police officers were in the area of 152nd Street and 107th Avenue after two teens were caught trying to steal an unmarked police vehicle. According to police, one person was arrested as they continued to search for another suspect in the area. Around 3 a.m., two teens were attempting to break into an unmarked police car, but when they failed to do so, they moved on to another car nearby which they successfully broke into and sat inside. As the crime unfolded, a neighbor’s Ring camera captured the criminal activity and notified the off-duty police officer nearby. When the officer went outside to investigate, he saw the teenagers attempting to steal the car and both suspects ran in opposite directions. The officer shortly caught up with the 18-year-old suspect as he called for backup. Live video footage showed several police cars on the streets of the surrounding area. Miami-Dade Police officers closed off part of a Northwest Miami-Dade neighborhood in response to a fatal shooting in the area.Around 3:30 a.m., the shooting took place near Northwest 107th Street and Seventh Avenue, Friday.Detectives are currently on the scene to investigate the crime scene.No further details are available at this time. Police conducted an investigation in Miami after two people were found stabbed near the intersection of Northeast Third Court and 79th Street.On Friday morning, Miami Fire Rescue transported a man and woman to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Trauma Center. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (WSVN) – Friday SpaceX had its 23rd launch this year, but what makes this one different is that the Falcon 9 rocket was launched with a NASA instrument called TEMPO. The device is the first space-based device to monitor major air pollutants from above.TEMPO stands for Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution. GUANGZHOU, China — France and China have reached an agreement to work together to deepen military cooperation, as President Emmanuel Macron’s trip to China draws to an end with a joint call for peace in Ukraine. According to a joint statement issued by the governments of Macron and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the Southern Theater of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army — chiefly responsible for the South China Sea — will “deepen the dialogue” with Asia-Pacific command of the French forces. The pledge comes amid heightened tension between U.S. and Chinese forces in the Pacific.
