A local developer is appealing the approval of a new Costco warehouse to be built in north Brentwood. The Brentwood Planning Commission on June 20 gave the green light for the proposed new store south of Lone Tree Plaza and east of Heidorn Ranch Road. The approval would have been final had West Coast Home Builders, an Albert D. Seeno III company, not filed the appeal, requesting the City Council reconsider it.The council will hear West Coast Builder’s appeal at its regular 7 p.m. meeting Tuesday at City Hall.Under the appeal filed June 28, attorneys for West Coast Builders argue that the environmental documents the city used for the project are outdated and the proposal should be denied or at least continued for further environmental review. In an earlier letter to the Planning Commission on June 20, the developer’s attorneys noted that the city approved the environmental documents for the area’s specific plan in 2018 and then adopted an addendum, changing the land-use designation for...

The “Looking Glass” ponders economic and real estate trends through two distinct lenses: the optimist’s “glass half-full” and the pessimist’s “glass half-empty.”Buzz: Only 15 states started 2023 with slower economic growth than California.Source: My trusty spreadsheet looked at the past two years of economic growth, as measured by annualized changes in state gross domestic product tracked by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Kerr’s Women’s World Cup in doubt, but she still helps inspire Australia to win against Ireland

SYDNEY (AP) — How much of a role Sam Kerr can physically play for Australia at the Women’s World Cup remains completely uncertain.Even if her time on the sidelines with a calf muscle injury is extended, though, Australia’s iconic striker still has important role to play for the tournament co-hosts after helping to inspire the Matildas to a 1-0 opening win over Ireland on Thursday.“Obviously losing a player like Sam, probably the best player in the world, and just for her as a person, we were completely heartbroken,” said Steph Catley, who scored the 52nd-minute penalty that secured Australia’s win in front of a record crowd. “We had to gather ourselves pretty quickly, but we used her spirit and used the fact that she wasn’t able to be out there with us to help us push on. And I think that’s what it’s going to take for as long as maybe she misses.”Both host nations were in action on the opening day. The Australians were expected to have too much star power against I...

HOYLAKE, England (AP) — Crouching over the ball with his legs wide apart, Christo Lamprecht — all 6-foot-8 (2.03 meters) of him — crunched his last drive of the day into the fairway and more than 350 yards.“Look at the size of him,” was one of the muffled remarks from outside the ropes along the 18th fairway as the 22-year-old South African loped after his ball, his golf pants not long enough to cover his socks.Lamprecht’s first ever round at a British Open was one this amateur, and those watching him, won’t quickly forget. At one stage on Thursday at Royal Liverpool, Lamprecht — a college kid from Georgia Tech — was leading the Open by three strokes. He wound up shooting 5-under 66 and was set to be high on the leaderboard by the end of the first round. So, did that come as a surprise to a hard-to-miss player who was certainly turning heads at Hoylake?“I mean, as an amateur, yes, it is,” said Lamprecht, who was considered among the top college players in the U.S. for the last two yea...
