ST. LOUIS - It was another Sunday morning of sometimes heated but always civil political debate on Hancock and Kelley on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023.John Hancock, Republican consultant, and Michael Kelley, Democrat consultant, discussed the following topics:A homeless camp on the lawn of St. Louis City Hall appears to be growing, and city officials have no plan to remove it with used toiletries in plain sight.  One woman is 7 months pregnant.  Her husband fears she may give birth in a tent on the lawn. The couple is protesting a lack of “coed” shelter space for married couples.           Cash bail is officially against the law in Illinois starting Monday. Suspected felons will be freed “en masse” unless a state’s attorney can show a judge clear and convincing evidence that a suspect poses a threat to a person or community and/or the suspect is likely to flee.   Missouri’s pro sports teams are launching an effort to put legalized sports betting on the 2024 ballot and let voters decide the...

Did you know Illinois has a state song?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 22:42:54 GMT

ILLINOIS (NEXSTAR) – Most people know what their state symbols are, such as the state flag, bird, or even plant. There’s one thing most people can’t recall, and that’s their state song. It’s no surprise that Illinois is one of 48 states in the nation with a state song. While almost every state song contains the name of the state in the title (with some adding a word or two for variety), Illinois is not one of those states. Its state song is titled “Illinois,” and its lyrics were written by Civil War veteran Charles H. Chamberlin in 1893. Verses were set to the tune of a song named, “Baby Mine” by Archibald Johnson. Want to hear the song sung yourself? Here's a YouTube link to a virtual performance by the University of Illinois' Women's and Varsity Men's Glee Club. The song’s lyrics can be viewed below:By thy rivers gently flowing, Illinois, Illinois,O'er thy prairies verdant growing, Illinois, Illinois,Comes an echo on the breeze.Rustling through the leafy trees, and its mello...

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — The classic chant “1-0 to the Arsenal” was heard at Everton on Sunday as Gunners fans celebrated a Premier League win that was a throwback to its pragmatic style of the mid-1990s.A 69th-minute goal by substitute Leandro Trossard was a rare moment of quality in a game more typical of the Arsenal way celebrated in song before Arsene Wenger’s arrival as coach in 1996 began a new era of creativity.Trossard cleverly guided a first-time, left-footed shot into the net off the far post after Bukayo Saka cut back a pass he could take smoothly in his stride for the 1-0 win.It capped a standout week for the Belgium winger who scored a similarly impressive goal with his right foot Tuesday in his national team’s 5-0 rout of Estonia in a European Championship qualifying game.“I’ve been practicing all my life with both feet and it helps you in the game as an attacker,” Trossard said.Trossard had come on midway through the first half to replace Gabriel Martinelli who was i...
