The Chicago Cubs got within 90 feet of a series sweep of the Miami Marlins — three times — on a boisterous, sunny Sunday at Wrigley Field. They wound up with a 5-4, 14-inning loss thanks to an ill-timed balk and a lot of marooned baserunners. But it could have been a lot worse. In fact, the good-vibe Cubs (17-17) won’t have to look far Monday to feel a lot better about themselves. The National League Central’s hot mess of a so-called division favorite comes to town for a three-game series. That would be the last-place — by a lot — St. Louis Cardinals, who needed a seventh-inning outburst Sunday at home against the lousy Detroit Tigers to snap an eight-game losing streak before their first meeting of the season against the rival Cubs. At 11-24, the Cards lug the NL’s worst record to Chicago. If the Cubs think it sounds bad to be told they’re terrible (or worse) at hitting with men in scoring position (3-for-20 in Sunday’s loss) or to ...Timeout or no timeout? Celtics’ decision backfires in Game 4 loss to 76ers

PHILADELPHIA — Twice, the Celtics had a chance to win Sunday’s Game 4 with a game-winning shot on the final play. They came up short both times. One common denominator? They chose not to call a timeout in both instances. With an opportunity to win the game in regulation, the Celtics generated a great look when Jayson Tatum found Marcus Smart for a wide-open 3-pointer that bounced off the rim to send it to overtime. Then, after James Harden’s go-ahead 3-pointer with 18 seconds left in the extra session, the Celtics didn’t call timeout. The decision backfired. They were too slow, and it cost them. Tatum found Smart on the wing, where he hit the shot. But it came after the buzzer.Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla has empowered his players all season in these moments to make a play without the need to call timeout. But it didn’t work this time.“We’ve been doing it all year,” Al Horford said. “We feel confident in that and I felt like that was the right thing. The momentum was there. China has been demanding more security from Pakistan for its nationals residing and working in the Islamic country since 2021, when a suicide bomber killed nine Chinese and four Pakistanis in an attack in Pakistan’s volatile northwest.More recently, a Chinese national working on the Dasu Dam, a Chinese-funded hydropower project and the biggest of its kind in Pakistan, was arrested on blasphemy charges after an angry mob accused him of insulting Islam when he criticized a coworker for taking too much time to pray during working hours. Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy laws carry the death penalty, and sometimes even a mere suggestion of blasphemy is enough to entice mobs to violence or lynching.
