Austin blocks plan to demolish Rainey Street bungalow as bar empties out

Austin blocks plan to demolish Rainey Street bungalow as bar empties out AUSTIN (Austin Business Journal) -- A plan to demolish one of Rainey Street’s last bungalow homes has been met with a wave of resistance by Austin City Hall, leaving a local bar caught in between. Now home to the closing Placeholder Tiki Bar, the owners of the approximately 1,100-square-foot, single-story building at 96 Rainey St. were blocked from demolishing the existing structure to redevelop the site. The Austin Historic Landmark Commission on Nov. 1 declined to vote on the owner's request to replace the old home, originally constructed in 1887, with a two-story, flat-roofed brick building. The commission’s inaction effectively brings the property owner’s plans back to the drawing board. A 75-day consideration period for the request comes to a close in mid-November. The plan has been in place for about four years, presumably to make way for a new entertainment business on-site.Read the full story at Austin Business Journal.

Small Bites: The High Hat, a jazzy new Southwest-inspired St. Paul breakfast spot, hits all the right notes Before The High Hat opened this summer, I stopped by to chat with owner Michael Noyes.Albums by Taylor Swift and Thelonious Monk rest near the turntable at The High Hat, a new Cathedral Hill restaurant. (Jared Kaufman / Pioneer Press)I was first struck by the stunning transformation he made to the former Bon Vie Bistro and A Piece of Cake location in St. Paul’s Cathedral Hill. The physical space was his starting point, he told me, and the food menu followed. He’s worked in St. Paul restaurants for years as a “front-of-house guy” and is also a drummer. The High Hat is his first solo project.I was excited to return for a meal once the restaurant had gotten on its feet — and Noyes nailed it. The cafe was bustling (but not overly noisy!) on a weekend morning earlier this fall, and the vibrant and jazzy atmosphere was truly delightful.Oh, and the food was great, too.My dining partner and I started with drinks. The staff, many of whom are Taylor Swift fans, created the coffee menu, a...

Biden goes to an Illinois auto plant saved by a labor deal as he promotes a worker-centered economy By JOSH BOAK (Associated Press)WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden went to Chicago on June 28 to give a landmark speech on “Bidenomics,” only to learn in private during the trip about a soon-to-close auto factory, news that was a challenge to his vision for the country. The prospect of a shuttered Stellantis plant in the small city of Belvidere became an immediate priority for Biden. He ordered up an economic analysis and spoke to company officials about the plant, according to White House officials. The Democratic president wanted to show that his policies could deliver for workers, rather than repeat the decades of factory closures that had gutted parts of the Midwest and fed into a deep political divide. On Thursday, Biden will visit Belvidere to showcase that auto plant, which has reopened as part of the settlement of a targeted strike by the United Auto Workers union. The reopening “goes to the heart of who he is, the heart of his vision for the country and how he’s led,” said...
