(CNN) — A storm moving through the Northeast is threatening more than 40 million people with excessive rainfall and has already caused flooding that led to at least four deaths in Pennsylvania.Weather conditions in New York are unstable, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul told reporters Sunday, warning the state could see record rainfall levels. She pleaded with residents to avoid unnecessary travel.“A flash flood doesn’t give you warning. It comes literally in a flash,” Hochul said. “And in those moments, your car can go from a place of safety to a place of death.”The power is out in about 9,300 homes, mainly in Dutchess and Sullivan Counties, Hochul said, noting utility workers are trying to restore power.“If you’re one of those 9,300 families without your power, it is a frightening time,” she said.More than 5 million people in Southern Connecticut and Southeastern New York, including most of New York City, were under a flash flood warning until 4 p.m. ET., according to the National Weath...‘Mission: Impossible’ debuts with $80M over 5 days, igniting box office but missing expectations

NEW YORK (AP) — After a globe-trotting publicity blitz by star Tom Cruise, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” launched with a franchise-best $80 million over five days, though it came in shy of industry expectations with a $56.2 million haul over the three-day weekend, according to studio estimates. The Paramount Pictures debut was boosted by strong overseas sales of $155 million from 70 markets. But while a $235 million worldwide launch marked one of the best global openings of the year, “Dead Reckoning” couldn’t approach the high-speed velocity of last summer’s top film, “Top Gun: Maverick.”“Dead Reckoning Part One,” the seventh film in the 27-year-old series, had been forecast to better the franchise high of the previous installment, “Fallout,” which opened with $61 million domestically in 2018. Instead, it also fell short of the $57.8 million “Mission: Impossible II” debuted with in 2000.That puts the film’s opening-weekend tally very close to&nb...Two dead, including 17-year-old, after dirt bike crash in Wareham

PORTLAND, Maine — Partners on a $1 billion project aimed at bringing Canadian hydropower to the New England power grid are trying to sort out how cost increases during lengthy litigation will be shared, in hopes of getting the stalled project moving.A provision in a spending bill approved Thursday by the Massachusetts House would open the door to a renegotiation of the transmission project between the developers and Massachusetts utilities. The original contract called for the project to be funded entirely by Massachusetts ratepayers; negotiations would determine how any additional costs would be shared.Lauren Diggin from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources said she was thankful to the House for including language needed to jump-start the so-called New England Clean Energy Connect.“Completion of the NECEC line is important for Massachusetts customers. OTTAWA — Canada’s record-breaking wildfire season has now seen 100,000 square kilometres of land scorched as blazes continue to burn out of control across the entire country. The total area burned is roughly the size of Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and Lake Michigan combined. “There are some very, very large fires still burning and a number of them are out of control so that number is going to continue to rise,” Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair said in an interview Thursday of the vast amount of land that’s burned.Canada surpassed the record set in 1989 for total area burned in one season on June 27 when the figure totalled 76,000 square kilometres, and communities have faced evacuation orders, heat warnings and poor air quality for months. The majority of blazes are now in Western Canada, and British Columbia has the greatest number, with more than 370 of the country’s 878 active fires, Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre data shows.More than ha...Novak Djokovic rues his missed chances after losing a highly entertaining Wimbledon final in 5 sets
