France is rocked by a wave of protests and its President Emmanuel Macron blames “video games” for the violent outbreaks. Without even trying to deal with the riots, he is playing his own game, deliberately striving to set on fire not just his own capital but the region which is a source of energy resources for the entire European Union. The South Caucasus is a very tight arena, where the interests of several superpowers collide. A separatist enclave on occupied Azerbaijani territory of Karabakh, controlled by the Russian military and populated by Armenians, is in the centre of the regional confrontation, which is fizzling out. The EU and the US are very interested in that because Azerbaijan is a strategic alternative source of energy resources. Both the US and the EU are brokering a peace deal, because, as the Israeli Begin-Sadat Center underlines, the enclave is a “kill switch” for the gas and oil supplies to the West. However, Emmanuel Macron is obviously against a peaceful resolut...Baltimore, Md. police respond to ‘mass shooting’

Police arrested more than 700 young rioters overnight as France endured a fifth day of turmoil that saw a suburban mayor’s home targeted with a burning car.The violent demonstrations appeared to be subsiding after the police killing of a 17-year-old of Algerian and Moroccan descent on Tuesday sparked riots in the Paris suburb of Nanterre that then spread across France.French police arrested 719 people nationwide by early Sunday, fewer than the 1,300 rioters detained on Friday night, with Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin signalling a “calmer” atmosphere than at the start of the weekend. The mayor of L’Hay-les-Roses — a suburb of Paris — tweeted that his family were the victims of an “assassination attempt” as a car was rammed into his home overnight. He called it a “milestone” of “horror and ignominy.” Mayor Vincent Jeanbrun was not at home at the time of the attack — he had been in his office, as on the previous nights, th...MLB Notes: Brayan Bello emerging as one of baseball’s best young pitchers

When someone like Brayan Bello comes along, it’s natural to get ahead of yourself. The most promising young pitcher to come out of the Red Sox system in more than a decade, Bello has drawn comparisons to Pedro Martinez and been pegged by some as a future Cy Young contender. The 24-year-old is undeniably talented, but even the most promising young arms don’t always pan out, so coming into the year it was fair to worry if the bar was being set too high too soon. Now, it’s looking like the expectations may not have been high enough.Bello is becoming an ace right before our eyes, and with each passing start he’s further established himself as a guy who doesn’t just have greatness in his future, but who is a legit stud right now. With his latest dominating performance, in which he carried a no-hitter into the eighth before ultimately being saddled with a tough-luck loss, Bello now has a 3.08 ERA over 73 innings through his first 13 starts. His 2.6 wins above re...France has a 5th night of rioting over teen’s killing by police amid signs of subsiding violence

PARIS (AP) — Young rioters clashed with police into early Sunday and targeted a mayor’s home with a burning car as France saw a fifth night of unrest sparked by the police killing of a teenager, but overall violence appeared to lessen compared with previous nights.Police made 719 arrests nationwide by early Sunday after a mass security deployment aimed at quelling France’s worst social upheaval in years. The crisis posed a new challenge to President Emmanuel Macron’s leadership and exposed deep-seated discontent in low-income neighborhoods over discrimination and lack of opportunity. The 17-year-old whose death Tuesday spawned the anger was laid to rest Saturday in a Muslim ceremony in Nanterre, a Paris suburb where emotions over his loss remain raw. He has been identified publicly only by his first name, Nahel. As night fell Saturday over the French capital, a small crowd gathered on the Champs-Elysees to protest his death and police violence but met hundreds of officers with batons ...Daily horoscope for July 2, 2023
