TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — China and Russia pledged to strengthen cooperation on Sunday, a day after a brief rebellion by a Russian mercenary commander against Kremlin fizzled out.Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko made a previously unannounced visit to Beijing, where he met with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang to discuss “international and regional issues of common concern,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on its website. It was unclear whether Rudenko’s visit had been planned or was in response to a rebellion on Saturday during which Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of private mercenary army Wagner Group, ordered his troops to march on Moscow in the greatest challenge to President Vladimir Putin in his more than two decades in power. Prigozhin later on Saturday reached a deal with the Kremlin to go into exile and sounded the retreat.China has not officially commented on the crisis in Russia.Russia and China, while not formal allies, have maintained close ties throughout Moscow’...Teen boy injured after stabbing in Victoria and Dundas East area

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — When the International African American Museum opens to the public Tuesday in South Carolina, it becomes a new site of homecoming and pilgrimage for descendants of enslaved Africans whose arrival in the Western Hemisphere begins on the docks of the lowcountry coast.Overlooking the old wharf in Charleston at which nearly half of the enslaved population first entered North America, the 150,000-square-foot (14,000-square-meter) museum houses exhibits and artifacts exploring how African Americans’ labor, perseverance, resistance and cultures shaped the Carolinas, the nation and the world. It also includes a genealogy research center to help families trace their ancestors’ journey from point of arrival on the land. The opening happens at a time when the very idea of Black people’s survival through slavery, racial apartheid and economic oppression being quintessential to the American story is being challenged throughout the U.S. Leaders of the museum said its existen...Roller coaster derails in amusement park in Sweden, killing 1 person and injuring several others

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — An easyJet flight from the United Kingdom to Turkey was diverted to Greece early Sunday after two passengers became drunk, unruly and started shouting at fellow passengers and crew, authorities said. The two Russian passengers, both men aged 48 and 39, respectively, were arrested after the plane, on a scheduled flight from Manchester to Dalaman in southwestern Turkey, touched down in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki. The two faced a prosecutor who charged them with disturbing the peace, disrupting transport and disobeying the crew’s instructions. There was no physical altercation, authorities said. After they were charged, the two men were released pending trial, which will take place in November and which they are not obligated to attend, but will be represented by their lawyers. Having arrived in Greece without a visa, they were led to a police precinct but were expected to be put on a flight to Turkey later Sunday. (AP) - Russian troops deployed to protect the capital withdrew Sunday after a mercenary forces beat a retreat. But the short-lived revolt could have long-term consequences for President Vladimir Putin’s two-decade hold on power and his war in Ukraine.Putin’s image as a tough leader had already been badly bruised by the Ukraine war, which has dragged on for 16 months and claimed huge numbers of Russian troops. Saturday's march toward Moscow by forces under the command of his onetime protege, Yevgeny Prigozhin, exposed further weaknesses, many analysts said.It also meant some of the best forces fighting for Russia in Ukraine were pulled from that battlefield: Prigozhin's own Wagner troops and Chechen ones sent to stop them. After calling for an armed rebellion aimed at ousting Russia’s defense minister, Prigozhin and his fighters appeared to seize control of the Russian military headquarters in Rostov-on-Don that oversee fighting in Ukraine. They then advanced towards Moscow largel...Emmys power rankings: Drama

Third party a spoiler? Other parties driving voters awayRe: “Third-party candidate on state’s ballot could spoil Biden’s election,” June 17 commentaryMark Udall misses the point of national interest in third-party candidacies. It is not about tilting an election to a Democratic or Republican candidate. It is borne out of disgust with both parties and their years-long inability to capably govern. To assert that less than 10% of voters are “toss-up voters” ignores overwhelming evidence of shifts out of both major parties to non-partisanship — voters are desperate for new choices. Udall is doing the very thing voters are sick of — intransigently circling the wagons around his viewpoints. He contends a third-party candidacy would do nothing to solve our political challenges? Well, the two-party system has shown just how inept they are at the task. American voters are sick of politicians whose governing strategy is grounded in holding their ...Latest news
