Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 02:08:32 GMT

CALGARY — Luis Sanchez Diaz didn’t win a lottery this year for on-campus housing at the University of Calgary, but he still considers himself lucky. The international student, who’s in his fourth year of a political science degree, studied online during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 from Cuernavaca,Mexico. He moved to Calgary in fall 2021 and lived in a campus residence until he lost his spot in April. “It was a lottery, so it really didn’t matter how early you applied, if you have paid your fees, how good of a tenant you were,” said Sanchez Diaz, 24. “So, whoever got it was offered a place to live in residence and whoever didn’t was put on a wait-list.”Sanchez Diaz searched for a place to live off campus, which he said was stressful, and managed to find a small, shared apartment five minutes away from school with “pure luck.”Not everyone has been so lucky, however, as post-secondary students across the country struggle to f...

REGINA — Kiké Dueck loves gym class, especially long-distance running. The 10-year-old, who is nonbinary, says everyone at school “is really good about gender,” but knows not all parents are accepting.“There’s a few people in my school that are in the LGBTQ2S+ community but are afraid to tell their parents,” said Dueck, sitting beside their mom, Dennie Fornwald, in their Regina home.“I don’t know anybody in my class that has wanted to change their name, except for one. But for pronouns, there is one person.”The mother added, “There was one kid that said, ‘Hey, I’m not ready to use these pronouns at home yet.'”That’s one reason why Fornwald, an early-childhood educator at a public school in Regina, is concerned about Saskatchewan’s new changes requiring parental consent when children under 16 years old want to change their names or pronouns. She said because kids will need their parents to sign a cons...

New Texas law will close dog, cat breeding loophole

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 02:08:32 GMT

LUBBOCK, Texas — A Texas law to close loopholes for large-scale commercial dog and cat breeding operations takes effect Sept. 1.Current law defines a dog or cat breeder as someone who possesses 11 or more adult unspayed females and sells 20 or more puppies or kittens in a calendar year. However, this poses a few problems. One problem is that 10 adult female dogs can give birth to up to 120 puppies per year, according to the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF).Another problem is the increased potential for untraceable cash transactions, which then lead to large-scale breeding operations that lack proper regulation or oversight.Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 876 into law on May 29. The law will require dog or cat breeders with five or more adult unspayed females to obtain a license to operate under the Texas Occupations Code.Breeding dogs and cats will be considered a profession, so Texas breeders will be held to a higher standard.Steven Greene, director of operations at Lubbock ...

Other voices: Tough on crime should not mean inhumane U.S. prison conditions

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 02:08:32 GMT

CHICAGO — At the Waupun Correctional Institution, a maximum security Wisconsin penitentiary located about three hours northwest of Chicago, some 1,000 prisoners have been confined mostly to their cells for more than four months. In an extensive Aug. 19 report on the horrendous conditions, The New York Times alleged “walls speckled with feces and blood,” birds flying around cells, an absence of toilet paper, the cancellation of any and all visits with family and no meaningful time whatsoever in the fresh air.Officials argued that staff shortages and threats of significant disorder and disruption at the prison had forced their hand — but that is no excuse for such inhumane official treatments of human beings over so long a spell. Whatever their offense. Governmental inability to recruit staff should not mean worse conditions for inmates, and the situation at Waupun sounds like it borders on cruel and unusual punishment.Waupun is hardly alone. Take, in a very di...
