It comes in many shapes and sizes, offers many different products and services, and is available in a wide variety of flavors. “It” is The American Dream. And nowhere is The Dream more vibrant than in Southern California’s dining scene where, for generations, immigrants have brought their traditional flavors from far and wide to create a rich tapestry of culinary experiences. In the early 1960s, Kai Tai Chang and his wife, May, decided to leave behind political instability in Hong Kong and migrate to Los Angeles in search of a better future for themselves and their four children. May and Kai Tai Chang (Nick Chang)On the same day their plane landed at LAX, Kai Tai began looking for work in Chinatown. Sailing away on a Bay Area ferry is like having your own little party cruise but much cheaper. The ocean breeze whistling in your ears, the cold beers with happy, Hawaiian shirt-clad strangers, the views of Alcatraz and the Bay Bridge – sorry BART, but why wouldn’t people take the ferry as often as humanly possible? The ferry is not just for commuters. It’s a little adventure all on its own. And summer and fall are the perfect time to get out on our water-based fun-time transit and have some fun, both aboard and after you disembark — tasty eats, interesting sights and more. Here are four suggestions on how to turn a ferry trip to Alameda, Oakland, San Francisco or Mare Island into something more.A quick note: We chose the San Francisco Bay Ferry, because it has more routes than the also-splendid Golden Gate Ferry. In spite of the fact that every packet we tried was well within its use-by dates, nearly half had freshness issues. The problem is that nuts are very high in the kind of fat that goes rancid quickly. Their shelf life is 6 to 12 months, if stored in a cool, dark place. Rancid nuts not only taste awful, they’re potentially bad fo...Pac-12 football preview: The top games each week in a schedule loaded with marquee matchups
