FBI warns of 'deepfakes' in sextortion schemes

(The Hill) - The FBI is warning the public about the use of “deepfakes” to harass or blackmail targets with fake sexually explicit photos or videos of them. The agency said in a statement on Monday that technological advancements have continuously improved the quality, customizability and accessibility of content generated by artificial intelligence (AI), and victims have reported that their photos or videos have been altered to turn into sexual content. The FBI said malicious actors usually take content from someone’s social media account, the internet and the victim themself to create the content that is explicit and appears to resemble them. The content is then circulated on social media, online forums or pornographic websites. Those who create the content and target victims are usually motivated by wanting to obtain additional content, financial benefit or the ability to harass others, according to the agency. The FBI said it has observed an increase in the number...

RICHMOND, Va. AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The Austin Police Department has identified the person killed in a single-vehicle crash on Research Boulevard late last month. The crash happened Friday, May 26 shortly after 11:12 p.m. in the 8900 block of Research Boulevard, near Metric Boulevard. PREVIOUS: Car crash into pole leaves 1 dead in north Austin According to APD, Derek Washington, 36, was driving a sedan northbound when he lost control and crashed into a telephone pole. Washington died at the scene. This incident is being investigated as Austin's 40th fatal crash of 2023, resulting in 40 fatalities for the year. Mother rescued with daughter at Kaaterskill Falls

HUNTER, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Forest Rangers responded to Kaaterskill Falls for a report of a hiker with an arm injury after falling on a streambed of rocks. The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) says on Wednesday, May 31, around 3 p.m., the pair was hiking down the stone staircase over the rocks to wade in the water. While returning from the trail, the mother fell on the streambed of rocks. A Forest Ranger and Windham Ambulance found the two at the lower falls and splinted the woman's arm. They were helped out to the trailhead. SP: Man crashed stolen car while impaired by drugs Hunter Ambulance and Greene County medics helped take the patient to the hospital. SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Wagon Train BBQ, located at 671 Mariaville Road in Rotterdam, is reopening on Wednesday after a fire at the restaurant on Sunday. LOUIS - Tragedy overnight in Soulard after a man is found shot and killed near a popular landmark. The crime scene unfolded in the parked lot just outside the 'Bottom Line Sports Bar and Grill' on South 7th Street and Broadway right across the street from the Soulard Farmers Market. Police got the call just after 12:30 a.m.Authorities told FOX 2 when officers arrived they found the victim shot in the parking lot. At this point, it's unclear how many times the man was shot.
